LRS
External Fixator is a device uses for stabilization and immobilization of long bone open fractures. LRS is an external fixator used for treatment of bone defect ,non-union and shortening of bone. It consists of a long rod and clamps which is connected to bone by means of schanz pins. It is available in various of sizes. It can be applied in both adults and paediatrics.
1. LRS application in a bone gap. Here bone is transported from above down wards
2. LRS application in a large bone defect. Here bone is transported from either side of bone
3. LRS application in a very small defect. Here bone compressed on one side and lengthened on another end
4. LRS application in a shortening. Here bone is lengthened
5. LRS application in a shortening .Here bone is lengthened on either side.
So LRS can be used in various indication like ilizarov. But it is less stable than ilizarov as it is stable in one plane
LRS is also used in deformity correction. But here instead of normal clamps swivel clamps are used. Here also you can do acute correction or gradual correction depends on the clinical situation
